Position: Arabic and/or Kurdish Language Translator
Number of Positions: Twelve
Base of Operations: Baghdad, Iraq (International Zone)
Duration: 12 months (with possibility of extension)

Background

A U.S. company implementing a Justice Sector Reform project in Iraq is seeking twelve Arabic (and/or Kurdish)-English translators for deployment to the International Zone (IZ) in Baghdad, Iraq. Candidates should be professional level interpreters required to conduct interpretation or translation of both spoken and written materials from Arabic and/or Kurdish (source) to English (target) as well as from English (source) to Arabic and/or Kurdish (target).

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates will work in a judicial transition program to translate speakers' words in real time conversation, including technical legal terms, jargon, and acronyms in order for English-speaking company members to effectively interact with their Iraqi counterparts.

Translators will also be responsible for translating technical, diplomatic, and legal documents from Arabic and/or Kurdish to English and English to Arabic and/or Kurdish in a timely fashion. Duties may include attending meetings with high ranking Iraqi officials to facilitate information exchange and may include travel throughout Iraq, with security provided. Translators may also be required to act as interpreters for large classes that may be conducted by USG judicial trainers.

Qualifications

- U.S. Citizen or Third Country National (TCN).
- A Bachelor’s degree or certificate in translation/interpretation from an accredited institution.
- Experience translating legal or diplomatic materials in a professional setting.
- A command of written and spoken English that is the equivalent to that of an educated speaker at the high school or university level.
- A command of the Arabic and/or Kurdish language in both written and spoken form with ability to understand and communicate in a variety of Arabic dialects, particularly the Iraqi dialect, fluently.
- Demonstrated command of the Arabic and/or Kurdish and English languages equivalent to the standard Department of State testing schedule at the S-4/R-4 levels of languages (S-Speaking and R-Reading, respectively).
- Ability to convey several paragraphs at a time after hearing them in full with the actual length of each utterance left at the discretion of the speaker.
- Ability to advise Justice Advisors on cultural differences and proper professional and cultural conduct in Iraq.
- Basic skills in the use of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Basic skills in the use of standard word processing programs for Arabic or Kurdish languages, as well as familiarity with standard transcription technology.
- Ability to work in a high-stress environment.
- Candidates possessing advanced degrees or a juris doctorate will receive priority consideration.
- Candidates must meet the “No Objections” security clearance criteria, as determined by the U.S. Department of State.
